| Summary: | En partant des vestiges cultuels de la déesse Allat à Palmyre et Hatra, cette contribution explore ce que la coexistence des représentations iconographiques signifie par rapport au caractère d’une divinité du Proche-Orient gréco-romain. On peut montrer que à la fois à Palmyre et Hatra l’image de culte originelle est d’une importance cruciale dans les temples dédiés à la déesse. Cette iconographie est typique du temple, elle change peu et ne se combine pas facilement avec des représentations alternatives de la déesse. Même l’interpretatio graeca du nom de la déesse n’a pas de conséquences sur sa forme originelle. La statue de culte personnifie le caractère unique de la déesse qui était l’objet d’un culte dans un sanctuaire particulier. Starting with the cultic remains of the goddess Allat in Palmyra and Hatra, this article explores the significance of co-existing iconographic representations for the character of a deity in the Graeco-Roman Near East. It can be shown that both in Palmyra and Hatra the original cult image is of paramount importance in temples dedicated to the goddess. This original iconography is typical of the temple, slow to change, and not easily combined with alternative representations of the goddess. Even the interpretatio Graeca of the goddess’s name did not have consequences for her original form. The cult statue personified the unique character of the goddess that was worshipped in a particular sanctuary. |
