Description
Summary:Religions have always been, in part, healing religions. Throughout history, they have been seen as partners in the search for meaning in life and its vicissitudes, with emphasis on disease situations. Since the inaugural work of William James, who referred to the preventive role of religion in certain diseases, in association with science, several studies have explored the relationship between religiosity/spirituality and health and well-being. But what role and functions does religion play today, in contemporary Western societies? In this article we seek to answer this question, as well as systematize a set of research on the influence of spirituality/religiousness in different areas of the human being, namely in health, well-being, social support, prevention and risk reduction behavior. From classic authors to contemporaneity, this article focuses on: i) Concepts of religiosity and spirituality; ii) The role and functions of religion; iii) The interconnection between religion, society, religiosity, health and disease; iv) The influence of spirituality and religiosity on health, well-being, social support, primary prevention and risk behaviors; v) Religiosity and spirituality as a coping strategy for understanding and dealing with critical situations.
