Description
Summary:While spirituality in itself is a very elusive concept, the specific challenge to the research in spirituality and health as a field is to define in which ways the concept ‘spirituality’ can be fruitfully applied to both mental and physical health. Since the hermeneutic relativity of such a humanistic concept has to be connected to the measurable results that empirical sciences work with, some difficulty inevitably arises. This has not impeded, however, the formation of at least two clearly defined approaches in spirituality and health, one we could call existential-behavioural and the other more related to the natural sciences. As we usually fail to discern these options, many interactions between the science of religion or religion studies and the research on spirituality and health are harmed to the point of an obstruction to dialogue. Our aim in this paper is to present and conceptualize both alternatives in the terms of the humanities.
