Summary: | This article considers how the Contemplative Cultural Third, informed by the Third, cultural humility, and contemplative postures, may aid with addressing culture and matters of religion/spirituality in therapeutic work. Distinctions between multicultural competence and cultural humility are considered. Additionally, psychoanalytic dynamics of surrender (Ghent, 1990), radical openness (Hart, 2017), bracketing (Slochower, 2013), and without memory or desire (Bion,1967) are examined in interaction with the Third. Furthermore, this article utilizes a case study to illustrate the development of the Contemplative Cultural Third. |
