| Summary: | The dissertation focuses on highly religious Muslims in Germany who are involved in activities of their own religious community as well as in non-religious civil society organisations. They are thus committed to society as a whole - for example, in the areas of environmental awareness, human rights, media, politics, welfare or integration - and are involved into various socio-religious networks. What role do these specific networks play in the commitment? How do the committed Muslims justify their commitment? What factors enable access to a commitment, what favours and consolidates a commitment? What conflicts arise and how can they be resolved? Based on extensive qualitative research, the study distinguishes between four types of committed Muslims: Self-initiated Social Entrepreneurs (religiously inspired and non-religiously inspired), Progressive Religious Activists, Structure-Oriented Integration Helpers and a possible fourth type of the Irritated Religious Preserver. Social and religious networks, reactions to ongoing negative public discourses about Islam, individual (migration) experiences and low-threshold opportunity structures play a crucial role in engaging for the common good. Im Mittelpunkt der Dissertation stehen hochreligiöse Muslim*innen in Deutschland, die sich sowohl in Aktivitäten der eigenen Religionsgemeinschaft als auch in nichtreligiösen Organisationen der Zivilgesellschaft engagieren. Sie engagieren sich somit für die Gesellschaft als Ganzes - zum Beispiel in den Bereichen Umweltbewusstsein, Menschenrechte, Medien, Politik, Wohlfahrtspflege oder in Integrationsprojekten – und sind in verschiedene sozio-religiöse Netzwerke eingebunden. Welche Rolle spielen diese spezifischen Netzwerke für das Engagement? Wie begründen die engagierten Muslim*innen ihr Engagement? Welche Faktoren ermöglichen den Zugang zu einem Engagement, was begünstigt und festigt ein Engagement? Welche Konflikte entstehen und wie können diese gelöst werden? Auf der Grundlage umfangreicher qualitativer Forschung unterscheidet die Studie vier Typen von engagierten Muslim*innen: Eigeninitiative Sozialunternehmer*innen (religiös inspiriert und nicht religiös inspiriert), Progressiv-religiöse Aktivist*innen, Strukturorientierte Integrationshelfer*innen und ein möglicher vierter Typ des Irritierten religiösen Bewahrers. Um sich für das Gemeinwohl zu engagieren, spielen soziale und religiöse Netzwerke, Reaktionen auf anhaltende negative öffentliche Diskurse über Islam, individuelle (Migrations-)Erfahrungen sowie niederschwellige Gelegenheitsstrukturen eine entscheidende Rolle. |
