In a time span of approximately four decades, in the heart of the second century ad, two peculiar cases of ‘religious creation’ appeared. Apparently, they could not be more different for historical circumstances, manners and contents, nor for the respective ‘actors’ and authors of their first establishment and promotion within the vast scenario of the Roman Empire. The first case is about Antinoo, the young Bithinyan loved by Hadrian, whose melancholic beauty is celebrated by hundreds of images, statues, busts, and coin representations which cover that scenario with mixed density until the fourth century and beyond. The second case displays the ‘new Asclepius’ with its monstrous serpentine form, whose name, Glycon - ‘the sweet one’ - does not certainly erase the rough visual impact of an animal figure with some ambiguously ‘humanized’ features in an artificial head. Yet, notwithstanding the distance between the two models at issue, that we can perceive at first as unbridgeable, there is a salient series of aspects and contents that allow their comparison. Both cases of ‘religious invention,’ even if quite different for a number of important aspects, touch the same historical-cultural horizon in which for experienced entrepreneurs of the Alexander type or even for the highest power holders such as Hadrian - so open to the widest and different intellectual experiences -, it was possible to start new cultural reforms, yet well-established in old and tested areas. | ||
