Summary: | It has become commonplace to refer to the world as a global village. Given that metaphor, the desirability, even the urgency, of inter-religious understanding hardly requires defending. I would like to endorse the proposal of the late Ninian Smart, Keith Ward, and others that a central goal of dialogue ought to be articulating a global theology based on the premise that various religious traditions are the common property of our species. Such an enterprise would not conduce to a blended religion or a bland amalgam of faith clichés but rather to a strategy of addressing large problems in a coherent fashion. |
