| Summary: | This article deals with the matter of politics and religion. It seeks to analyze the relation between the political regime called "Castilhism" and the religious field in Brazil during the "Old Republic". The "Castilhism" was a particular regime inspired by the positivist doctrines of Auguste Comte, which arose specifically in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. This regime, through its political party Partido Republicano Rio-Grandense (Republican Party of Rio Grande - PRR), attempted to implement the "modernization project" of the capitalist system in a clearly conservantist way. So, its acts have reflected over all the social spheres, including the religious one, in which the party’s worldview about human beliefs has provoked some tensions, but also, on the other hand, syntonies and synergisms. This study intends to point out some details on what "Castilhism" represented to the state of Rio Grande do Sul, especially in its religious sphere.in which the party’s worldview about human beliefs has provoked some tensions, but also, on the other hand, syntonies and synergisms. Sighting this objective, it will indicate some struggles and debates governmental action has caused in the first three decades of the 20th century. The public education will be the main focus in this analysis, for in this area one can perceive bigger controversies and criticisms concerning the religious sphere. |
