Summary:[Within the frame of secular modernity, religion has become something in need of measured explanation, something that is either at odds or consistent with the natural state of humanity. A genealogy of the concept of prayer, then, tells a story about our contemporary condition, how we are and who we are. In this essay I focus on how prayer, for practitioners and scholars, promoters and critics, often distills something essential about religion and offers a prescriptive humanism oddly devoid of hands. In a collage-like presentation I trace how the measurement of prayer—either professionally or politically, for purposes of demystification or confirmation of its efficacy—has increasingly focused on the mind and the nervous system, in general.]
