Description
Summary:[This essay considers hip-hop artist and entrepreneur Kanye West (b. 1977) as a subject for Charles Long (b. 1926). How would Long understand what West is and has done? Charles Long made interpreting Black religion in America a determining practice for the study of religion. Even more, Long hopes that the study of the religion of the oppressed will help us see the oppressive elements in religion more generally. Kanye West is famous for many things, but perhaps none more prominently than his sacrilege. The same person who rapped, "I made Jesus Walks, I'm never going to hell," is also the one who said, "When you hear about slavery for 400 years … for 400 years? That sounds like a choice." Describing his impiety as inseparable from his artistry, placing his voice in the history of New World contact, I suggest you can't understand the religion of the oppressed without understanding Kanye's particular brand of offense. Reading Kanye West as a blasphemer, I argue Long would see his blasphemy as his oppugnancy.
