| Summary: | Muslims, wherever they are found in the world, wish to submit completely to their religious dictates including its law. Hence, the demand for Sharī‘ah law continues to surface in any society where Muslims exist. Lagos Society in Nigeria is not left out of this. There had been attempts by Lagos Muslims to have Sharī‘ah law applied in their locality. This study engages in the chronicle of the demands of the Lagos Muslims on Sharī‘ah law application at various stages of Islam in Lagos. It begins by discussing the advent of Islam in Lagos. It also appraises the struggle for Sharī‘ah application particularly during the colonial era. The study examines the post-independence agitations which eventually led to the establishment of the Independent Sharī‘ah Panel (ISP). It assesses the activities and modes of operation of the ISP before drawing conclusion. |
