Description
Summary:Demonstrates how contacts made by the prefect of the Vatican archives, Count Giuseppe Garampi of Rimini, during his two journeys through the Netherlands, 1762 and 1764, resulted in a long correspondence with bibliophiles and booksellers and laid the foundation of a later ultramontane network, with Garampi, first as a nuncio at Vienna, 1776-85, and then as a cardinal, 1785-92, as its pivot. The most important correspondents from the Netherlands were the booksellers Kribber, Crevenna, and Guaita, the bibliophiles Cobenzl and Nelis, and the Bollandists and Ultramontanists Frankenberg, Castel San Pietro, and Wellens.
