| Summary: | The Franciscan friar Borromaeus (Gerrit) de Greeve (1875-1947) was one of the most renowned preachers and orators in the Catholic Netherlands in the first decades of the 20th century. The Franciscans gave him the opportunity to develop his natural talent for drama and this became his strongest point when he started preaching as an assistant priest. His participation in the preaching campaign against alcohol abuse took him all through the country. He soon became one of the most sought-after speakers and preachers. He was not afraid of any topic or audience. His Passion sermons were famous. Contemporaries claim that the strength of Borromaeus's sermons did not so much lie in their content as in the way in which he delivered them; in his voice, his facial expression, and his feeling for pathos and drama. The exact qualities that some considered to be his strength came in for criticism from others. Borromaeus was the preacher of the regained self-confidence and extroverted triumphalism of the Dutch Catholics. Once this triumphalism came to an end, the style of preaching of which he had been the champion also disappeared. |
