Description
Summary:Examines what Catholic preachers in the 18th century had to say about wealth and its unequal distribution. It appears that, from a rather deterministic belief in providence, they legitimized the established order, including its extreme degree of social injustice. They held up an idyllic, idealized picture of a harmonious society in which everyone is satisfied with the place and function allotted to him by God. For the rich, respecting God's plan meant that they should not misuse their wealth and that they should give alms to the deserving poor. To induce the rich to use their wealth in accordance with God's will, preachers appealed to their self-centered desire for salvation, using, for instance, the parable of Lazarus and the rich miser. With threats and unctuousness they showed the rich how to get through the "eye of the needle" by avoiding the dangers of pride and, above all, greed on the one hand, and on the other by showing charity to fellow creatures in need. All in all, however, the actual demands for charity that were made on the rich were rather modest.
