Description
Summary:It has been assumed that the independence of the Belgian Congo in 1960 occurred without any preparation from the side of the colonizer. Literature does point out the role of the Church, which took steps to give black people a place in the local hierarchy. What was overlooked, however, was the necessity to research the activities of the Catholic laymen, the missionary orders, and the hierarchy in Belgium and to put them into the framework of the internationalization of the Catholic Action and the universalism and anticommunist policy desired by the Holy See. Research allows a clarification of other facets of the Catholic strategy of emancipation, apart from the already well-known "Zairization" of the clergy: the introduction of segregation on African soil, meant to generate emancipation; the accelerated training of black executives; and the abolition of white racial arrogance, which was its main obstacle and so typical of the colonial paternalism of the old school. Finally, the main result of this campaign asserted itself mainly on Belgian soil because it prepared and gave direction to the post-1960 "Third World" action in Catholic circles.
