| Summary: | Discusses a curious difference between the developments in France and in the Netherlands at the time of the religious wars. In France the Reformation led to extreme violence between parts of the population. 'Les politics,' who advocated tolerance, were a minority who succeeded in imposing tolerance on the warring parties only in 1598, after a long struggle and with support from the king's authority. In the Netherlands, the monarch was not the solution to the problem but was actually the problem himself; the monarch was the moving spirit behind the persecutions, while the great majority of the people was actually opposed to the use of violence in religious matters. |
