| Summary: | We could define "bridal chamber" as a ritual in gnostic societies (2nd-4th c.). The origins of the "bridal chamber" are to be found in a gnostic myth. Gnosticism itself does not provide the definition of it and many scholars offer different opinions about this gnostic sacrament. This is because only a few of gnostic treatises mention the "bridal chamber". The idea of the "bridal chamber" belongs to the gnostic Valentinian thought but we can look for an explanation of "bridal chamber" in the gnostic Sethian teaching about syzygy. The first part of this paper unfolds syzygy in Sethian treatises and gives some examples of trichotomy of the human in Alexandrian theology. In second part the author of the article tried to define the "bridal chamber" in Valentinian thought, especially in the Gospel of Philip through teaching about syzygy. |
