Description
Summary:The article investigates the problem of the delay of Parousia in the 20th century theology. It evaluates the works of four academic authors and two solutions offered by the denominational theologians. By analysing each author separately, critical evaluation is given, pointing both to the differences and to the points of interaction. The author tries to ascertain, whether the 20th century has a new answer to the question, why the Parousia promised by Jesus Christ is still pending. After summarizing the results of the study, the following conclusions are obtained: (1) In the history of Christianity, the crisis of the delay of Parousia was solved by the dogmatics, the sacraments and the ecclesial order, but in the 20th century theology appears a new actualisation of that crisis, providing new solutions to the problem. Since the beginning of the 20th century, the Parousia theme is seriously studied, but understood very differently. Opinions range from the understanding that the Parousia has not been delayed, that it is misunderstood, or has already taken place, up to the apocalyptic Parousia waiting in the nearest future. (2) Despite the different opinions on the Parousia problem, there appears a common vision in the 20th century theology, which in the delay of Parousia accentuates the human role in society and their responsibilities in life.
