Description
Summary:In the early days, the Salvation Army was boldly evangelising among the lowest strata of society and was fighting against a risk of social exclusion. It had a slogan "Soup, Soap and Salvation" (and it still remains the same). However, during a certain period of time, the Salvation Army devoted more effort to social work, and the evangelisation ceased to be as important. The Salvation Army in Latvia at the turn of the 20th and the 21st century also mainly engaged in the provision of social assistance, nevertheless, it had some members, who wanted to return to the traditional approach. The aim of the article is to explore the operating methods of the Salvation Army in Latvia in the last decade, and orientation of its members - a traditional approach (ideas and preferred operating methods are equal to those at beginning of the organisation's existence) or a progressive approach (preferred operating methods differ from those at the beginning). It is concluded that the operating methods of the Salvation Army in Latvia and views of its members remain closer to the traditional approach.
