| Summary: | Baptism as a movement in the territory of Latvia emerged in the 19th century. Prior to their conversion, early Latvian Baptists belonged to the Evangelical Lutheran Churches of Curland Consistory. The road to Latvian Baptism was not fast but gradual, spanning across more than ten years from 1847 to 1860. The origin of Latvian Baptism was established through the interaction of several factors and individuals. A significant place and role in establishment of Latvian Baptism belongs to teacher Michael Hamburger (1824-1896) and Lutheran pastor Conrad Josua von Beuningen (1820-1898). Although the first Latvian Baptist and Lutheran reciprocal polemic in the second half of the 19th century was marked by mutual intolerance, the goal of this work is to reveal that the origin of Latvian Baptism was closely connected with the influence of the above mentioned school teacher and pastor, both of whom represented Lutheran Church. The first Latvian Baptists by separating from Lutheran Churches did not separate from the ideals of Christian life taught within Lutheran Church. On the other hand, the first Latvian Baptists requested that these ideals of Christian life must correspond to the daily life. Precisely this requirement was the cause for mutual polemics, differences in understanding of its meaning, essence and practical implications. Latvian Baptist historiography has not emphasized the proper contribution of Lutheran piety in Latvian Baptism. Therefore, this work deals with this issue, observing the influence of Michael Hamburger and Conrad Josua von Beuningen upon the early Latvian Baptism, pointing to the fact that the origin of Latvian Baptism has more in common with the 19th century Lutheran Churches than considered before. |
