| Summary: | Augustine’s Confessions, and its central scene in the garden at Milan, have always been opened to many different interpretations. This article first deals with the structure of the work as a conversion narrative and then examines the dramatic structure of the famous garden scene, especially the way it answers and opposes other passages in the text. This will enable us to define, still in the light of the Confessions, the way this climactic episode marks changes and continuities in Augustine’s life. Les Confessions de saint Augustin, comme la scène centrale du jardin de Milan, ont fait et font toujours l’objet d’interprétations divergentes. Il s’agit ici d’étudier la structure de l’œuvre comme récit de conversion, puis de dégager la structure dramatique de la fameuse scène du jardin, ainsi que les effets d’échos et d’opposition que cette scène entretient avec d’autres passages. Cela devrait permettre de mesurer, toujours à la lumière des Confessions, la part de rupture et de permanence que l’épisode a produite dans la vie d’Augustin. |
