Description
Summary:The aim of this article is to outline and challenge two contemporary approaches on the debate regarding the relation between secularism, State, and the regulation of religion in modern democracies. First, it will focus on the issue of democracy and the tolerance of religious diversity, and secondly, the problem of the nation-state and the regulation of religion. As for the first theme, we chose to discuss the works of the philosophers Jürgen Habermas and Charles Taylor, and regarding the second one, we will focus on the work of the anthropologists Talal Asad and Saba Mahmood. The goal is to point out positions, arguments, convergences, and divergences, analyzing the debate in order to understand their basic principles, possible applications, as well as their contributions and limits to the field of studies of secularism and religion. In order to assess the limits of these approaches, we will recur to the Brazilian context and its particular configuration of secularism.
