| Summary: | The issue of inter-denominational understanding has been relevant to Ukrainians for many centuries. During the discussions the idea of proclaiming the Ukrainian patriarchate was crystallized. According to the clergy, this would resolve the existing inter-denominational contradictions. However, the problem has become more political than religious. The emergence of such a powerful structure in Ukraine was opposed by the Polish authorities and the Polish-Latin clergy, as well as by the Russian government and its Orthodox Church. For Catholic Poland and Orthodox Moscow, the establishment of an independent church in Ukraine was associated with state formation and signified a sharpening of the Ukrainian issue. Therefore, depending on the political situation, work in this direction was suspended or, conversely, revived. Питання міжконфесійного порозуміння було актуальним для українців протягом багатьох століть. Під час дискусій викристалізувалася ідея проголошення українського патріархату. На думку духовенства, це дозволило б розв‟язати існуючі міжконфесійні протиріччя. Однак, проблема набула більше політичного, ніж релігійного характеру. Виникненню такої могутньої структури в Україні противились польська влада і польсько-латинське духовенство, а також російський уряд і його православна церква. Для католицької Польщі і православної Москви становлення незалежної церкви в Україні асоціювалося з державотворенням і означало суттєве загострення українського питання. Тому, в залежності від політичної ситуації, робота в цьому напрямку призупинялася або, навпаки, пожвавлювалася. |
