| Summary: | This essay analyzes the theme of the Indian Great Mother in the works of the greatest Italian scholar of Asian civilizations, Giuseppe Tucci (1894-1984). The subject dealt with is extremely vast and is examined with reference to various religious traditions (Hinduism, Buddhism) and literary sources belonging to many historical periods. In this most complex picture, the ideology of the extra-human female Being is viewed in all her manifestations as Earth, Mother, Goddess, active Energy (sakti), and considered both in the macrocosm of the universe and the microcosm of the meditating person who awakens that Energy within himself during the Yoga practice. Finally, the study is concluded by a "return" to history, that is, to the religious symbol of the victorious Great Mother over the forces of the devil, adopted in the Indian fight for independence in the first half of the 20th century.
