Description
Summary:Around 570 B.C., a catastrophe struck the urban centre of Corinth destroying public buildings as well as many dwellings and commercial edifices. An open-air shrine housing a stele was built upon the remains of one of these buildings, which had existed in the agora since the beginning of the century at least. The relationship between this sacred space and the building which had been violently destroyed is not coincidental and other similar situations may be found throughout Corinth, leading us to believe that these types of cults were meant to strengthen the relationship between the survivors and the inhabitants of the ancient buildings. Therefore, the so-called Stele Shrine in the Corinthian agora may be seen as a place for the public worship of the restless spirits of the victims of the tragic events which occurred in the city centre, victims who became the common ancestors of a specific group or of the entire community.
