Summary: | The paper aims to examine three passages from Egils saga, in which magic is combined with the theoretical and practical knowledge of runes. These portions of the text will be reproduced, translated and annotated. The analysis is focused in particular on the relationship between ritual, oral and written culture, seeking parallels within the Norse tradition and in the more general area of continental Germanic civilisation. The intention is to show that Egils saga is a precious and indispensable source in the definition of the usage of the terms Gmc. *rūnō and O.N. rún. The paper, moreover, examines the relevant sources in this perspective and attempts to define the resulting relationship between pagan worship and the Christianisation process (which seems to be characterised by an ideological and juridical value, rather than a religious one).
