Résumé: | AncestorsintheAfricancontextarereferredtoas'thelivingdead',intheabsenceofamorepreciseterm.Itdenotesanideathatdeathisnotannihilationorevenseparation.Theancestorsareconsideredaslivingmembersofthecommunity.Theyareresponsibleforchannelingthelifeforcewithinthecommunity,andthusexertaninfluenceonthevitalityofthecommunity.TheinitialbreakthroughmadebyAfricanChristiantheology,namely,thetheologicalinterrogationofAfricanexistence,isbeingbuiltuponandenhanced.ThenotionofancestorsintheAfricanworld-viewiscaughtupinthisinterrogation,withimplicationsforChristology,ecclesiologyandethicsintheAfricancontextandbeyond.ThisarticleexaminestherelationshipbetweenancestralbeliefandAfricanChristiantheology.Itarguesthat,theancestorsarevital,toAfricanidentityandsoitwouldbeJollytoignorethem.Further,itseekstodiscoverhowancestralbeliefmaycontributetoChristology,ecclesiologyandethicsandholdpossibleimplicationsbeyondAfrica.Hence,itiscrucialforthestudytodeterminetheextenttowhichtheAfricanunderstandingofancestorsisapplicabletoJesusChristandidentifyitseffectsontheexpressionof Christianity as a religion. |
