Summary:ThespateofviolenceandinsecurityinNigeriasincethereturntodemocraticrulein1999isalarming.Violenceofvariousmagnitudesaredailyevolvingandleadingtolossofhumanandmaterialresources.Moreperplexinghoweveristheobservationthatsomeofthesearedeliberatelyplannedandtargetedatspecificlocations,individuals,orgroupsofpeople.WhilethenationisstillgrapplingwiththeBokoHaramissue,despitegovernment’sassurancethatthegrouphasbeendecimated,killingspurportedlybyherdsmenacrosssomestatesofthefederation,addedanotherdimensiontothespateofviolenceandinsecurityinthenation.Thispaperthereforeisacarefulexaminationofthesecuritychallengespresentlyfacingthenation,especiallyasitisoccasionedbytheBokoHaraminsurgencyandtheincessantattackbyherdsmenincertainpartsofthecountry.Itadoptedthedescriptiveapproach.Consequently,itdescribestwoorganisedviolenceandtheinsecuritytheypresentlyengenderedforthecountry.Itthenidentifiesissuesasexecutivemischiefmaking,politicisationofreligion,absenceofjusticeandexternalfactorsassomeofthecauses.Whileaffirmingthattheseincidences,ifnotproperlyhandledportendsdangerfortheindividualcitizen,andthreatensthecorporateexistenceofthenation, it suggested the way forward for peace to reign in the Nigeria.
