Summary:We have already got used to the fact that the conflict in Northern Ireland is (ad hoc) explained by religious factors. In this still living history, the religious labeling of the sectarian communities was more convenient than the entanglement in the complexity of animosity between Christians. Meanwhile, Catholicism and Protestantism have become perfectly suited to the reality as "overlays" on the political (and economic) conflict of republicanism with loyalism, effectively masking the long-standing colonial aspects of this problem. A lot has been written about various political and social aspects of The Troubles, so it is worth considering its visual representations. In this area, the most frequently mentioned are films devoted to IRA activities or politically involved murals, so I decided to turn towards less-analyzed reactions of the art world to the conflict. Particularly important here are artistic commemoration policies, undertaking difficult traumatic topics in a critical but non-biased way. Particularly important in these tactics is to indicate alternatives to fundamentalisms, by looking for an adequate artistic language through the use of local idioms and building complex metaphors.
