Description
Summary:The war in Syria and the activity of ISIS in the Middle East and North Africa have caused an avalanche of migration - mostly to Europe. Mass media and social media were filled with images of refugees. The specificity of these representations immediately contributed to the ideological polarization and increase in social tension - one provoked a reflection on the condition of humanity, while others called for concern about European identity threatened by Islam. On the 3rd of September 2015 after a failed crossing to Greece, the sea washed ashore the body of a Syrian toddler. Surprisingly, the image of Alan Kurdi became the icon of the crisis. In this way an iconographic motif was established, soon cloned in hundreds of paraphrases - from cartoons in Charlie Hebdo, through Internet memes, street art, to the art world. The photograph of the Syrian boy generated not only the reactions of compassion and solidarity, because the nationalist anti-immigrant environment reacted by the very-own visual counter-propaganda. This creates a pretext for reflection on the contemporary dynamics of image instrumentalization which from the phase of high symbolic saturation is quickly transferred to the stage of an "empty sign," easily filled by very different ideologies.
