| Summary: | The Catholic Church continually searches for innovative formulas of promoting sacred messages, which would be an effective answer to the contemporary trends of distancing from the religious sphere. WYD can be included in these initiatives, since it consolidates young people around special values and ideas, offered and presented in attractive forms, which on the outside resemble events organized within the spectrum of commerce and pop culture. In this article an attempt will be made to present the role and meaning of this undertaking both for the pilgrims as well as for its social response on the basis of youth meetings in Krakow. In this analysis, firstly, data collected by the WYD Organizing Committee concerning the community structure of pilgrims will be discussed; secondly, a part of the results of the survey of pilgrims conducted by the Institute for Catholic Church Statistics as well as the National Centre for Culture are discussed; and thirdly, research conducted by the Centre for Public Opinion Research (CBOS). |
