| Summary: | The Dutch religious studies scholar Claas Jouco Bleeker (1898-1983) was among the most eminent representatives of the phenomenology of religion movement in the 20th century. He understood the phenomenology of religion as a separate discipline of the study of religion whose aim was to study the ‘essence’ of religious phenomena. According to him, the phenomenology of religion combines a critical approach to the study of religious phenomena with empathy and understanding of them. Bleeker understood it as an empirical science, free from philosophical aspirations, and this was what, according to him, should have distinguished the phenomenologist of religion from the philosopher and the anthropologist who both refer to philosophical phenomenology. When it comes to method, he thought that phenomenologists of religion should not dabble in philosophical speculations because the phenomenology of religion is not a philosophical discipline, but a systematization of historical facts aiming at understanding of their religious meaning. |
