| Summary: | While looking at Europe struggling with the migration crisis, various analysts are trying to describe this new state of affairs in more familiar categories. The radicalisation of religious beliefs and terrorism accompany such academic disputes, which in effect leads to crucial revaluations and to the polarization of social tensions caused by them. This creates opportunities for numerous political and populist instrumentalizations and leads to the growing number of conservative and xenophobic attitudes even among those Europeans who have been indifferent to the refugee crisis so far. But can we stop at the point when we make a diagnosis on the clash of civilizations or their diffusion? Paradoxically, the contemporary visual culture (and especially art) seems to be heading in an opposite direction to the one indicated by this polarization, and it offers us a wider spectrum of attitudes and points to the fact that the problem has a more complex nature. |
