Description
Summary:Apocrypha have always played an important role in the Western culture. The apocryphal narratives should be seen as very interesting and crucial phenomena as they serve as a tool of constructing the given cultural identity. The cultural identity needs to be built basing on such mechanisms as collective memory, processes of autocommunication, creating a kind of metalanguage for expressing the cultural self-awareness. The above-mentioned processes prevent the Western culture not only from fossilising but from being divided into separated parts as well. The relations between canon and apocrypha can be compared to the relations between strategies and tactics which have been described in the work of M. de Certeau. Apocrypha use the dominating discourse of the canon for their own purposes like popularizing various political, social or religious ideas and at the same time they under pin the vitality of that canon, its symbols and language.
