Description
Summary:The article presents two perspectives, which are the attempt to provide an answer to the question whether the phenomenon of the so called new spirituality, widespread in the Western culture at the recent turn of centuries, recognized as the reversal of the XXth century decline of religion, can be ascribed to the broadly defined religious life or it transcends the realm of religion becoming thus a form of contemporary gnosis. The terms which are applied by the social scientists to describe this phenomenon such as "the substitute of religion" or "the post-religious spirituality without God" indicate that it does not belong to religion in the traditional sense. The research carried out by J. Mariański, the social scientist specializing in religion as well as the analysis of the contemporary philosophical texts carried out by J. Sochoń are confirming this intuition. Both researchers indicate the seriousness of the situation, which, however, is not hopeless. Their conclusion is that the contemporary man is at the crossroads of his spiritual choices. However, the acknowledgement of the fact that the pursuit of spirituality and the search of the sense of one’s own being is immanent to human nature allows to nurture the hope that it will not be definitively directed towards the "spirituality" without God.
