| Summary: | The term "Islamophobia" originated in the late 1980s, when the religious discrimination against Muslims began to grow. Islamophobic sentiments have gained more attention of researchers especially after the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001. The article is devoted to the concept of Islamophobia, which is a special case of discrimination based on religion and ethnicity, defined as an irrational fear of Islam and Muslims. It indicates the spheres in which many Muslims are discriminated against, among others, in employment, education and housing as well as dimensions of Islamophobia, which include: the historical, media, religious and political ones. The examples of Islamophobia in Europe are shown, whose manifestation are, among others, the ban on headscarves in public schools, or the publication of cartoons of Mohammed in the Danish newspaper "Jyllands-Posten", reprinted in many European newspapers and magazines. Furthermore, the article presents organizations and institutions that aim to combat Islamophobia in all its manifestations (e.g. the activity of The European Monitoring Centre on Racism and Xenophobia, and now The European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights), contributing to a change in attitude towards Muslims. Discrimination against religious and ethnic minorities, including Islamophobia, are within the subject area of religion in political science, a new scientific discipline that deals with the issues of the relationship between religion and the sphere of politics. Of particular importance for the fight against all discriminations is the interreligious dialogue and in combating Islamophobia the Catholic-Muslim dialogue. |
