Description
Summary:What has been undertaken in this study is the spiritual dimension of the voluntary simplicity movement and minimalism. As regards sociological inquiry into this subject matters, the researchers mostly focus on the contestation of consumerist society - such contestation that has become a part of motivations and activities of protagonists of simple life. However, the spiritual aspect of this phenomenon, which is aimed at in this article, still remains on the margin of scientific interest. The considerations start with a brief outline of the debate itself over the definition of new spirituality - the emphasis is put on separateness of the notions of "new spirituality" and "New Age". The differences between the New Age and voluntary simplicity are also highlighted. Neither downshifting nor anti-consumerism is a sine qua non for practicing the New Age, which distinguishes it from voluntary simplicity or minimalism. What constitutes another significant difference are the sources from which the New Age and voluntary simplicity originate. In the first case it is oriental spirituality and the western esoteric tradition, whereas in the second one these western sources of inspiration do not seem to have such significance.
