Description
Summary:The article centres on the theory of changes in the religious realm in a modern society, as presented by the German sociologist Hubert Knoblauch. The key to those changes is the increased importance of phenomena which can be described as "popular religion" and popular spirituality. The new spirituality combines within itself the forms and symbols coming from two distinct sources: the institutionalized religion and popular culture. Contents once reserved for religion alone, are now part of popular culture, at the same time forms of expression and themes present hitherto only in popular culture are being accepted by religious institutions. The author's key contribution to the sociological discussion on religion is a paradoxically sounding theory of the rise of the "religiousness" of culture while the institutionalized forms of religion are in decline, as well as a thesis about the parallel processes of functional differentiation and cultural deifferentiation occurring as a consequence of broadly understood spirituality. The author presents the most significant assumptions of Knoblauch's theory, as well as analysing the system of terms used to describe and interpret modern religious phenomena.
