Description
Summary:The current political situation in south Mexico is leading us to the conclusion that the country is in a constant state of war. The Zapatista rebellion has been taking a foothold in the region since 1994 and it is gaining the support of the local Maya population. This is among other factors due to the postulates of the EZLN that demand the protection of traditional indigenous cultures and values. However, we might also observe today a growing number of religious conversions among the Mayas. Some of them are turning towards Islam, despite their traditional ways of living. This article considers the phenomenon of religious conversion currently taking place in Chiapas as a part of a larger cultural, social and political context of transitions affecting the indigenous people in Mexico and in other parts of the world.
