The Zapatista rebellion has been taking a foothold in the region since 1994 and it is gaining the support of the local Maya population. This is among other factors due to the postulates of the EZLN that demand the protection of traditional indigenous cultures and values. This article considers the phenomenon of religious conversion currently taking place in Chiapas as a part of a larger cultural, social and political context of transitions affecting the indigenous people in Mexico and in other parts of the world.
