| Summary: | What the presented study explores are the issues of minimalism (mainly the case of Leo Babauta’s works), which is an example of a social phenomenon of increasing frequency. Minimalism itself is treated here not so much as a lifestyle but rather as a proposal of anti-consumerist spirituality. The growing popularity of minimalism corresponds to the economic crisis and can be treated as a remedy for one of its major causes - overconsumption. Minimalism resembles spiritual practice of asceticism and involves a variety of inspirations: Zen Buddhism, feng shui, Christianity, but also the youth counterculture of the 20th century or voluntary simplicity. In the article though, the focus is on similarities between minimalism and Zen Buddhism. Referring to Nicos Mouzelis’s typology, minimalist spirituality is treated here as a case of apophatic spirituality, in which the faith in any systems of beliefs is rejected. Seeking relations between minimalism and Zen Buddhism, my attention is drawn to the fact that the former is a kind of spirituality which is expressed in the search for inner peace. The reference to the term "elementary spirituality", used by Dalai Lama, aims at showing that this spirituality is appealed to by Leo Babauta, the author of the blog Zen Habits and books on minimalist ideology. |
