Description
Summary:In this paper I present the approach - attitudes, imaginations, and judgements - of Polish youth in gymnasiums, high schools and universities towards institutional priesthood and the work of parish priests, observed during three separate sociological researches made in the years 1983-2008, i.e. in the last 25 years. The attitude of my respondents in all the groups towards priesthood and priests had undergone significant changes, especially in the first decade of the 21st century. In the mentioned period of 25 years what has changes was the reception and understanding by the examined respondents of the essence of priesthood, as well their evaluation of the need for the profession of a priest in the Polish society and their families, or the attitude of examined group towards the role of the priest in the religious and secular life of people - individuals and social groups. The percent-age of respondents fully accepting priesthood and perceiving positively its role in the society had systematically dropped in the period mentioned before. On the other hand, in the researched period of 25 years a significant percentage of school and academic youth had understood correctly the essence of priesthood, recognized the social need for the profession of a priest and his work in the parish. In the judgement if this part of respondents institutional priesthood means "free" religious (divine) vocation, without which no priest could prevail in the priesthood, nor effectively play his role in the Church and the society, or to be a role model in religious and moral aspect for secular Catholics. According to the respondents, candidates aspiring to become part of the clergy follow the example of a vocational priest, and on the Church that is an important responsibility, even contradictory - it is a serious responsibility with a basic significance.
