Er war College-Preisträger, Senior Scholar, Hebräischdozent, Bibliothekar, Fellow und Vizepräsident von St. John's. Von 1914 bis 1925 war er Oriel Professor of Interpretation of Holy Scripture in Oxford. Als bekannte Autorität auf dem Gebiet der sem. Sprachen brachte er eine Reihe von Büchern zu atl. Themen heraus wie »Outlines of Old Testament Theology« (1899), »Notes on the Hebrew Text of the Book of Kings« (1903), seine »Schweich Lectures« von 1917, »Israel's Settlement in Canaan« (1918) und »Commentary on Judges« (1918). Seine beiden Werke zum NT, »Aramaic Origin of the Fourth Gospel« (1922) und »Poetry of Our Lord« (1925), hoben die Bedeutung des aram. Hintergrunds der Ev. für ihr richtiges Verständnis hervor. Für seine herausragenden Verdienste wurden ihm der D.Litt. und der Hon. D.D. verliehen. |
