| Summary: | This essay is by the author of Changing (CH), "a composite poem … based closely on the Chinese Book of Changes". Here, I explore the multiple functions of the "base-line" in this work. I then discuss Western artists' emphasis on chance in the I Ching, and argue that this is not the sole quality to be appreciated in the ancient masterpiece. In this context, I apply ideas from quantum theory to suggest that entanglement may be a key to better understanding the I Ching. Since this essay is primarily an exploration of my own compositional procedures as a poet, I implicitly acknowledge the subjective basis of this interpretative enquiry. |
