A Study on the ‘Failure’ of Relational Acceptance Provoked by ‘Success’ of Exclusive Violence: Focusing on the Case of Professor Sohn Won-young’s ‘Exclusion’

| Summary: | 본 연구는 한국 개신교의 배타성에 관한 논의를 중점적으로 다룬다. 한국 개신교에서 성행한 배타주의가 폭력적으로 전개된 것을 ‘성공’으로 전제하고, 이에 따른 반지성주의에 의한 손원영 교수의 해직 사건을 관계적 수용성의 ‘실패’로 규정한다. 본고는 한국교회의 배타성이 폭력적 사건으로 비화되어 교권 수호라는 불온한 ‘성공’과 타문화와 종교에 대한 수용성의 상실로 인한 개신교의 고립과 게토화, 그리고 지성주의의 풍토 조성의 ‘실패’를 다룬다. 우선 종교의 보편성과 종교 다원적 상황, 이에 반하는 한국 개신교 배타주의의 현황과 특징에 대해 살펴보고, 한국 개신교의 배타주의의 원인을 인식론적 측면과 역사적 측면, 그리고 문화 습속의 측면으로 나뉘어 검토한 뒤, 배타주의 현상으로 촉발된 대표적인 폭력적인 ‘배제’ 사례인 손원영 교수의 해직 사건을 종교현상적으로 기술한다. 그럼으로써 한국 개신교가 다종교 상황에서의 상대주의, 합리주의, 지성주의와 얼마나 상반되는 태도로 일관했는지를 비판한다. This paper focuses on the discussion of the exclusivity of Protestantism in Korea. It presupposes that the violent development of the exclusivism prevalent in Protestantism in Korea is a ‘success’, and the dismissal of Professor Sohn Won-young due to anti-intellectualism is defined as a ‘failure’ of relational acceptance. This study deals with the disturbing "success" of defending the ecclesiastical authority, the isolation and ghettoization of Protestants due to the loss of acceptance of other cultures and religions, and the "failure" of creating an intellectual climate. We examine the universality of religion, the situation of pluralism, and the current and characteristics of Korean Protestant exclusivism, examine the causes of Korean Protestant exclusivism in epistemological, historical, cultural aspects, and describe Professor Sohn Won-young’s dismissal, a representative violent "exclusion" case triggered by exclusivism. In doing so, we examine how Korean Protestantism has consistently opposed to relativism, rationalism, and intellectualism in multi-religious situations. |
