Hildegard of Bingen’s Medical/Spiritual Healing: the Intersection of History of Religion and Medical Humanities

| Summary: | 의학사에서 여성의 역할을 새롭게 보는 연구는 최근 의료인문학에서 중요하게 보는 주제 중 하나이다. 전근대에 종교와 의학의 밀접한 관계를 살펴보고 특히 종교적 여성들이 의학 지식을 어떻게 생산하고 적용했는지를 밝히는 작업은 의료인문학에서 주장하는 더 넓은 의미의 전인적 치료와 인간성의 전반적인 치유가 의학에서 가지는 중요성을 이해하는 데에 도움이 된다. 이런 의미에서 자연과학서와 의학서를 직접 썼던 빙엔의 힐데가르트(1098-1179)의 생애와 종교/의학 이론을 살펴보는 작업이 중요하다. 그의 종교서와 의학서는 의학적 의미의 치료는 종교적인 치유와 밀접하게 관련이 있었고, 건강의 회복은 종교적인 의미의 구원과 연결되어 있다는 점을 잘 드러낸다. 빙엔의 힐데가르트에게 인간은 원죄를 짓는 순간 건강을 잃었으며, 신에게 다시 돌아오는 구원의 과정은 인류가 건강을 회복하고 몸 안과 세계와의 균형을 다시 찾는 치료의 과정이자 치유의 과정이었다. 그리고 무엇보다 힐데가르트가 신의 사자로서 신의 말씀을 전하는 것은 자신뿐만 아니라 인류의 구원을 위한 일이었다. 힐데가르트가 의학서를 쓴 이유 역시 사람들이 자신의 의학서를 참고해서 몸의 균형을 회복하고 건강한 상태로 돌아가는 것을 돕기 위해서였다. 중세 유럽의 종교적 여성이었던 빙엔의 힐데가르트를 연구하는 것은 의학사에서 여성 참여라는 중요한 부분을 인지하고 의학이 앞으로 몸과 마음의 영역과 더불어 영적인 측면도 고려해야 하며, 더 나아가 인간의 건강은 공동체의 건강과 밀접하게 관련되어 있다는 의료인문학의 논의를 뒷받침하기도 한다. This paper examines Hildegard of Bingen(1098-1179), a German Benedictine nun, and her religious/medical treatises. Her writings on human body, diseases, and treatments represent the intersections between healthcare and religion: salvation and soundness: health and healing: women and caring duties. While Medical Humanities is a new interdisciplinary field to focus on human experience in interpreting medical knowledge, practice, and health care with critical views, her visions, knowledge, practices, and miracles in healing people can be a good example to re-examine the medical history in relation to religion and women. Hildegard of Bingen’s views of the human body and soul represents how human beings became sick when they committed the original sin and how they could be recovered by regaining the balance of different humors as well as recovering faiths toward God as a community. Her case is useful in the History of Religion and Medical Humanities to understand importance of premodern religious women’s participation in medicine and religion, encouraging the modern readers to acknowledge the complicated concept of the human health and pulbic health. |
