A Religious-Sociological Study on the Meditation Craze: With a Focus on Kathryn Tanner’s Postmodern Theory of Culture

| 520 | |a This article is a study on the "meditation craze" (K.mŏngsang yŏlp’ung) that had been spreading not just in South Korea but around the world as well, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. It analyzes the social phenomenon referred to as the "meditation craze" and evaluates the reaction it has evoked in Korean Christianity, on the basis of the cultural theory of Kathryn Tanner. This paper comprises the following three sections. The first is an analysis of the background of the meditation craze in South Korea, as well as the reasons as to why meditation has broadened its scope in popular culture. Second, along with the introduction of Tanner’s postmodern cultural theory, the meditation craze which is a cultural phenomenon, is interpreted in accordance with the theory. Third, based on Tanner’s theory, the response of Korean Christianity to the meditation craze is evaluated. Considering the fact that the value and impact of meditation have been rising in the post-Corona era since COVID-19, research from a diversity of perspectives covering both the positive and negative functions of meditation, will become necessary. | ||
