Global Religion: Toward the Study of Religion in the Global Contexts

| Summary: | 종교학은 지구화가 초래하는 종교적 복합성과 이를 반영하는 종교에 대한 관점의 변화를 목도해 왔다. 본 연구의 목표는 글로벌 환경에서 종교현상을 고찰하는 지구종교학을 모색하는 데 있다. 먼저 지구화, 지구학, 지구 근대성 등 관련 연구를 아시아의 맥락에서 살펴본다. 지구화된 아시아의 사회들은 서구적 인식론에서 벗어나 아시아의 전통과 지리, 문화유산의 가치와 함의를 재발견하고 있다. 이어, 20세기 후반 종교연구의 분석틀을 고찰한다. 종교학의 발전은 서구가 주도하는 지구화의 흐름과 궤를 같이 해왔다. 역사적/사회과학적 종교연구는 국민국가 체계를 중심으로 하는 문화적⋅제도적 환경을 배경으로 발전되었다. 마지막으로 지구종교학의 분석틀을 소개한다. 현대의 종교학은 지구적 상호의존성과 이동성, 초지역적 교류가 초래한 종교적 복합성을 이해해야 하는 학문적 도전에 직면해 있다. 필자는 지구적 맥락에서 관찰되는 종교적 다양성을 통합적으로 이해하기 위한 전망으로 ‘지구종교’를 제안한다. 지구종교학의 방법론으로 지역의 문화사와 지구적 상호연계성의 교차적 맥락에 주목하는 ‘지구상호작용적 접근’을 제시한다. The study of religion now faces an academic challenge to understanding religious complexity that was caused by globalization. This article aims to seek Global Religious Studies to explore religious phenomena in the global settings. First, I discuss globalization, Global Studies and global modernities in the Asian context in order to help formulate Global Religious Studies. Asian societies today revisit their own traditions, geography and cultural heritages in the global contexts beyond the Western hegemonic epistemology. Second, I examine the framework of historical/social scientific religious studies in the latter half of the 20th century, which was based on the cultural and institutional foundation for the nation-state system. Finally, I introduce a summary of Global Religious Studies. The conceptual framework of ‘Global Religions’ is suggested in helping systemically and wholistically understand increasing religious diversity in the context of globalization. Also I propose ‘global interactive approach’ to examine changing religious practices in the contexts in which local cultural histories and global interconnectedness intersect with each other. |
