A Critical Reflection on Interreligious Solidarity and Korean Protestantism: An Interreligious Practical Theology

| Summary: | 우리는 다종교사회를 살아가고 있다. 이 시대 종교의 관심은 어떻게 모두가 함께 어우러져 살아갈 수 있는가로 이동하고 있다. 안타까운 것은 이러한 관심은 종교가 수 많은 폭력의 원인이 되기 전 이미 다루어졌었어야 한다는 점이고, 다행인 점은 지금에라도 우리의 관심이 ‘함께살아감’으로 변화하고 있다는 것이다. 본 연구는 이 ‘함께살아감’의 실천 중의 하나인 ‘종교간 연대’에 대해 고찰한다. 특별히 이 연구는 기독교의 관점에서 종교간 연대란 무엇이고, 특히 한국 개신교에게는 이를 장려할 어떤 역사·문화적 유산이 있으며, 마지막으로는 더욱 심층적인 종교간 연대를 위해 선행되어야 하는 이해는 어떤 것들이 있는지를 살펴본다. 해당 연구 목표를 위해 본 연구는 선한 사마리아인의 비유에 대한 해석과 조슈아 아브라함 헤셸의 마틴 루터 킹 주니어와의 연대를 조명하며, 3·1운동, 세월호 사건, 손원영 교수를 중심으로 한 개운사 훼불사건에 대한 모금운동 등을 소개한다. 그리고 기독교(특별히 개신교)가 종교간 연대에 보다 주체적으로 참여하는 것을 돕기 위해서는 적어도 (1) 자기정체성의 중요성, (2) 종교다원주의 모델의 다양성, (3) 참여적 영성, (4) 종교 ‘인’들간의 연대로서의 종교간 연대, (5) 그리고 인간에 대한 연대로서의 종교간 연대 등에 대한 이해가 선행되어야할 것을 명시한다. 본 연구는 종교간 연대를 비롯한 다양한 종교간 연합 활동들을 위한 학문적 노력으로 메리 엘리자베스 무어가 제시한 ‘종교간 실천신학’의 한 시도이며, 실천과 학문의 조화를 위해 이와 같은 연구가 계속되어야 할 것을 제안한다. We live in a religiously pluralistic society. In this era, individuals’ interest in religion is shifting to how everyone can live together. Unfortunately, this emerging interest should have been addressed before religion caused countless violence, and fortunately, people’s interest is currently changing to "living together." This study examines "interreligious solidarity," one practice of living together and meeting religiously. In particular, this study examines how interreligious solidarity should be understood within Christianity, what historical heritages Christians inherit in Korea in regard to interreligious solidarity and public engagement, and finally, helpful ways to encourage Christians to participate in interreligious solidarity more actively. Overall, the author highlights the solidarity of Martin Luther King Jr. and Joshua Abraham Heschel, ultimately suggesting interreligious solidarity as a practice of faith. The paper then introduces the March 1st Movement, the Sewol Ferry incident, and the case of Professor Son Won-young as the heritages of interreligious solidarity in Korea, emphasizing that interreligious solidarity is not a new practice, but a part of the nation’s history. Lastly, the paper presents five understandings that encourage interreligious solidarity: (1) the importance of having self-identity in interreligious solidarity, (2) a diversity of religious pluralism models, (3) an understanding of engaged spirituality, (4) interreligious solidarity as solidarity among religious ‘people,’ and (5) interreligious solidarity as solidarity with human beings. This study is an attempt of "interreligious practical theology" proposed by Mary Elizabeth Moore. The author suggests that such an academic effort must continue. |
