Confucian Habitus of the Anglican Church of Korea: Focusing on the Case of the Seoul Anglican Cathedral of St. Mary and St. Nicholas

| Summary: | 이 글은 종교 사회학적 관점에서 한국 성공회 성당에서 볼 수 있는 유교적 특징을 살펴본다. 19세기 말에 성공회가 한국 땅에 소개되었을 때 한국인에게 유교적 전통은 상식과 기본윤리처럼 작용하고 있었다. 이에 성공회는 성공회만의 보편적인 전례를 소개하면서도 한국의 유교적 전통을 존중하여 받아들였다. 이러한 결과, 한국 성공회는 다른 한국의 개신교회와 구별되는 성공회 성당만의 보편적 특징을 유지하면서도, 동시에 유교 아비투스에 영향받아 한국 교회에서만 보이는 특징을 가지게 되었다. 이 글은 서울주교좌성당에 대한 참여 관찰과 그 구성원들과의 심층 인터뷰를 통하여 오늘날 성공회 성당의 모습을 들여다본다. 이와 같은 과정을 통해 한국사회의 유교적 전통이 성공회 성당 안에서 어떻게 구별되게 수용되어 작동하고 있는지 볼 수 있다. 즉, 한국 성공회 성당에서 유교 아비투스가 다른 한국 개신교회에서처럼 동일하게 작동하고 있는 부분과 함께, 그들과 달리 구별되는 성공회 성당만의 특징을 살펴볼 수 있다. This article explores the Confucian characteristics found in the Anglican Church of Korea from a sociological perspective. When the Anglican Church was introduced to Korean soil in the late 19th century, the Confucian traditions were like common sense and collective ethics for Koreans. For this reason, while introducing its universal teachings to Korea, the Anglican Church was influenced by the Confucian tradition of Korea. As a result, the Korean Anglican Church not only has the characteristics based on the teachings of the Anglican Church, distinguished from other Protestant churches in Korea, but also has characteristics that are not found in other Anglican churches in the world due to the influence of Confucian habitus. Focusing on the case of the Seoul Anglican Cathedral of St. Mary and St. Nicholas, this article delineates the features of the Anglican Church of Korea today through participant observation and in-depth interviews with its members. In doing so, one can observe how the Confucian traditions of Korean society are accepted and operated within the Anglican Church of Korea. In other words, one can observe the characteristics of the Korean Anglican Church, which are distinct from other Anglican churches in the world, along with the fact that Confucian habitus are present in the Korean Anglican Church just like other Korean Protestant churches. |
